A Mary Moment in a Martha Day

Read Luke 10:38-42.
How exciting it must have been for Martha and Mary to have Jesus as a guest in their home, and as expected Martha was scurrying around making everything comfortable for her distinguished guest. Mary, on the other hand, was seated at the feet of Jesus enjoying the closeness of his visit. Looking a bit frazzled, Martha appeals to the Lord to make Mary get up and help with the serving. Jesus replied, Martha you are busy with many things but Mary has chosen the good part. At first glance it might seem that the Lord was rebuking Martha for complaining about Mary’s neglect of the work but this was not the case. It wasn’t that Mary was lazy or that she was any more spiritual than Martha it was simply that she had chosen that “good part” of the day to spend time with Jesus. We all are busy and most of our days are Martha kind of days but within these days we need to find the good part or what we could call Mary moments. Living for God is mostly a common sense thing and certainly it makes sense to get things done but it is also common sense to be connected to the Master in prayer, meditation and the Word of God. It is up to us to find these Mary moments in our Martha days to keep a balance in our lives. As we reflect how our days usually go and try to pick out those times that WE spend with the Lord, those times that we call “A Mary Moment in a Martha Day”.

Rev 3:14-19 “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.”
In the Middle East, both hot and cold water are extremely useful. No doubt this is why Jesus wanted the church at Laodicia to be either hot or cold. Yet, because it was lukewarm, He was ready to vomit these Christians out of His mouth.
It seemed the root of their problem was not only indifference, but ignorance to their real condition. They even thought they were rich and needed nothing. Perhaps they even thought their prosperity was a blessing from God! However, they didn’t realize that their treasures could never substitute for genuine spiritually.
When He corrected them, Jesus shattered their illusions and called them to repentance. He asked them, “Don’t you know you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked?” He told them they needed authentic Christianity, and advised them to invest in spiritual treasures that have everlasting value. He also says – I only rebuke the ones I love. Therefore, they needed to repent and change, or He would vomit them out of His mouth.
